Dean Richard Kitta – Interview for EASTMAG

How is arts education changing, and what role do technology, interdisciplinarity and international cooperation play in this process? Richard Kitta, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the Technical University of Košice (TUKE), discusses current challenges, development priorities and the future of the faculty in an interview with Andrea Bercik, Editor-in-Chief of EASTMAG Košice magazine (3/2026).

One of the key topics of the interview is the gradual transformation of arts education and the development of an interdisciplinary environment in which art, science, design and new technologies naturally intersect. The Faculty of Arts at TUKE aims to continue developing its traditional artistic disciplines while creating space for experimentation, digital media and environments, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

International cooperation is an important part of this strategy. One example is the European project ATLAS+S, which focuses on developing a joint master’s programme in Art and Science, as well as activities within the Ulysseus European University Alliance. The faculty is also expanding its cooperation with the EIT Culture & Creativity platform, connecting arts education with the innovation and creative ecosystem.

However, according to the Dean, the goal is not to turn an arts school into a technology training centre. Artistic thinking, creative sensitivity, experimentation and critical reflection remain at the core of arts education. Technology serves as an additional creative tool, opening up new opportunities for collaboration among artists, designers, architects, scientists and technology experts.

The faculty’s development is therefore linked not only to new programmes and international projects, but also to strengthening its teaching team, creative community and research infrastructure, while remaining open to both the region and the wider world.
